+doc.3

No it will be inspiring when the sun rises over the tankers at Kitimaat but

no it will be sublime when the sun sets over Hibernia but

no it will not be a problem after you shotgun these tailings but

no there will absolutely be a long tail on these historical conditions but

+doc.2 - "threes"

Revelation

…1…The Book of the Law was dictated to Aleister Crowley by the Holy Guardian Angel Aiwass through the mediumship of Rose Edith Kelly—at least two of whom were drunk at the time.

- Grant Wilkins, from "Notes on Feral Gods"

The second issue of +doc is now available, and at 23 pages features poems by Ottawa poets Amanda Earl and Grant Wilkins. Both poems work outward from threes, whether in the title of Earl's "BLOOMS, PAINS, STRATEGIES", or in Wilkins' 3x3 structure-and-substructure in "Notes on Feral Gods".

Pushcart Nominations

When I solicited poems for Odd Poems 2021, I thought it was going to be a one-off thing. Getting back to making things (physical things), a fun project in the midst of the pandemic, etc. And then there was all kinds of interest, and rob mclennan asked me what my press was called, and I had to think of something, and after some panicking and Googling, I came up with a name, and now I have a press? And a couple of items released, more planned, and even more ideas? Which was I think part of his plan all along.

Having put out not just Odd Poems but having started +doc (a biannual long poems journal), and starting to actually think in terms of having a small press, I wanted to submit Pushcart nominations, and I have. These are:

I really want to thank all the poets who have let me publish their work, and everyone who sent work for consideration. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you, and I look forward to many more projects in the coming years.

+doc.1 - now available!

It should be really easy, telling
            The truth

A rat eating happily through wire

            Trouble is you never know
            Whether the breaker’s flipped

                    -       Tom Snarsky, from “Time As The Lightning Bolt We Don’t Receive Whole”

I am very pleased to announce the first issue of +doc, a new, biannual journal of longer poems. The response to my initial announcement was amazing, and thanks to submissions from so many incredible poets, the first issue took shape immediately.

Featuring work by melanie brannagan frederiksen, rob mclennan, and Tom Snarsky, and cover art by Fredrik Skarstedt, +doc.1 offers insight into the beauty and worry of our day-to-day lives, asking what we hold important, particularly in the context of the last year.

To purchase a copy, PayPal me or E-transfer jcd748@mail.usask.ca (CA: $4, US and International: $6, payable in CAD) and include your name and mailing address. Copies will be sent by regular mail. Please be patient with arrival times!

+doc: A Journal of Longer Poems

There is a wide proliferation of journals, both print and online, but a tendency towards the shorter: poems of a page or less, sometimes with a maximum line count explicitly stated in the submission guidelines.

Especially in the age of social media, there is a tendency towards shorter and aphoristic poems, poems that start and end neatly and can be easily shared. There aren't nearly enough venues publishing long poems.

+doc is a semi-regular journal focused on longer poems and poem sequences, including visual poetry. The definition of "longer" is kept intentionally vague in the hope it may fit your work.

Submissions are currently open. To submit, send an email to Julian Day at jcd748@mail.usask.ca with "+doc" as part of title and the piece(s) as a .docx/.doc attachment. Don't worry about a cover letter! Maybe just say hi? I can't wait to read your work (unless it's racist, homophobic, etc, in which case it will not be considered).

The first issue is planned for later in 2021.
